TRIP SUMMARY

Tour Overview

The Deccan Heritage Study Tour (6 Nights / 7 Days) is a comprehensive journey through the architectural, historical, scientific and natural heritage of Karnataka — one of India's most layered and culturally rich states. Designed for curious travellers, students and heritage enthusiasts, each day offers focused engagement with a specific era or theme of Deccan history. The tour begins in Bengaluru with a drive to Mysuru, stopping en route at Srirangapatna — the island fortress capital of Tipu Sultan. Here, Darya Daulat Bagh reveals the Indo-Islamic teakwood palace with its vivid wall murals documenting the Anglo-Mysore Wars, while the Gumbaz mausoleum honours Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali. In Mysuru, the grand Mysore Palace introduces the Indo-Saracenic architectural tradition and the history of the Wadiyar Dynasty. Day two heads to Shravanabelagola, home to the 57-foot monolithic Gommateshwara (Bahubali) statue — one of the largest free-standing stone sculptures in the world, carved from a single granite block in 981 AD. Ancient rock inscriptions in Kannada and Tamil provide a rare window into early South Indian epigraphy and Jain philosophy. The overnight halt is in Hassan. Day three is entirely devoted to Belur and Halebidu — the twin capitals of Hoysala temple art. The Chennakesava Temple at Belur and the Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu are unrivalled masterpieces of medieval Indian craftsmanship, with their star-shaped stellate platforms, lathe-turned pillars and metre upon metre of intricately carved friezes depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas — carved in the relatively soft chloritic schist (soapstone) of the region. Day four is a long drive to Hampi — the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An introductory evening visit to the active Virupaksha Temple and the ancient Hampi Bazaar sets the scene for what was once one of the wealthiest and most powerful empires in medieval South Asia. Day five is a full immersion in Hampi. The Vittala Temple Complex houses the famous Stone Chariot and the celebrated Musical Pillars — granite columns engineered to resonate at specific sound frequencies when struck, a remarkable example of ancient acoustic science. The Royal Centre — comprising the Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables, Royal Enclosure and its sophisticated water distribution networks — reveals the sophistication of Vijayanagara urban planning. Hemakuta Hill, with its cluster of early temples and panoramic views, completes the day. Day six passes through Chitradurga Fort on the return to Bengaluru — a seven-tiered medieval fortification (Elu Suttina Kote) built directly into the granite hill landscape, featuring impenetrable concentric walls, hidden passages and ingenious rainwater harvesting chambers integrated into the rock itself. The final day in Bengaluru is dedicated to modern science and natural history: the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum with its interactive physics, space and engineering exhibits; the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium for astronomy and celestial mechanics; and Bannerghatta Biological Park for hands-on engagement with biodiversity and wildlife conservation.
