Offbeat Spiti Valley Expedition: Monasteries, Remote Villages & Chandratal Lake – 8 Days / 7 Nights

Visit the iconic Key Monastery perched on a hilltop overlooking the Spiti River. Drive up to Kibber village and explore the surrounding Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, known as a natural habitat for the elusive snow leopard, blue sheep, and Himalayan vultures.

Spend the day exploring the high-altitude fossil belt. Hike lightly between Langza (the Buddha statue village famous for millions-of-years-old marine fossils) and Hikkim (home to the world's highest post office at 4,440 metres, where you can post handwritten postcards). Continue to Komic, one of the world's highest villages connected by motorable road.

Drive into the lush green gorges of the Pin Valley National Park, famous for its dramatic red cliffs, cedar scrub, and ibex herds. Arrive at Mudh village, the starting point of several legendary Himalayan treks like Pin Parvati and Bhaba Pass, and experience authentic local hospitality in a traditional homestay.

Descend to Tabo to explore the 1,000-year-old Tabo Monastery, often called the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas' for its preserved wall paintings, stucco statues, and cliff meditation caves. On the way back, hike up to the dramatic cliffside Dhankar Monastery and its pristine turquoise glacial lake perched high above the river confluence.

Return to Kaza to explore local markets and interact with local Spitian artisans specializing in woollen shawls and traditional crafts. Visit the historic Sakya Tangyud Monastery and sample traditional Spitian butter tea, tsampa, and authentic local cuisine.

Drive across the high-altitude plateau and Kunzum Pass toward Chandratal (the Moon Lake at 4,250 metres). Spend the afternoon doing a peaceful perimeter walk around the crescent-shaped turquoise lake, surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. In the evening, enjoy delicious warm camp meals and unforgettable stargazing under the clear night sky at the high-altitude campsite.

Wake up to a golden Himalayan sunrise over the peaks. After breakfast, drive back across Kunzum Pass, following the Chandra River canyon through Batal, Gramphu, and the engineering marvel of the Atal Tunnel into Manali. Arrive in Manali by late afternoon for your onward overnight journey or flight connections.
